On the odor of the enantiomers of Madrol

The asymmetric syntheses of the enantiomers of Madrol registered (1) are described and their odor properties evaluated. (1S)-(-)-1 exerts a powerful sandalwood odor with some animalic undertones, whereas its antipode smells sweet and flowery rather than like sandalwood. Molecular surface comparisons show remarkable deviations in the hydrophobic parts of the two enantiomers.
